近三寶而奉事之也。梵語優婆塞，譯作近事男，優婆夷，譯作近事女。
Those who attend on and serve the triratna, the近事男upāsaka, male servant or disciple, and近事女upāsikā, female servant or disciple, i.e. laymen or women who undertake to obey the five commandments. 近住 Laymen or women who remain at home and observe the eight commandments, i.e. the近事律儀.
親近奉事三寶之義。梵語優婆塞即近事男，優婆夷即近事女。
梵言烏波索迦此云近事謂親近三寶而奉事也
