原為外道，故稱為犢子外道。後出家入佛，故謂之犢子比丘。犢子部之部主也。詳見犢子部項。
Vatsa, the founder of the犢子部, Vātsīputrīyas (Pali Vajjiputtakas), one of the main divisions of the Sarvāstivāda (Vaibhāṣika) school; they were considered schismatics through their insistence on the reality of the ego; "their failure in points of discipline," etc.; the vinayaas taught by this school "has never reached China".
