有小乘大乘之二部，小乘之涅槃經，西晉白法祖譯，佛般泥洹經二卷，東晉法顯譯，大般涅槃經三卷，失譯，般泥洹經三卷，是為同本異譯，說八相成道化身之釋迦，於拘尸那城入涅槃前法之狀者。是化身佛之實錄也。其他中阿含中有涅槃經。說可得涅槃之觀行。大乘之涅槃經，西晉竺法護譯佛說方等般泥洹經二卷，東晉法顯譯大般泥洹經六卷，隋闍那崛多譯四童子三昧經三卷，此三本廣略不同，然皆為大乘涅槃經之初一分也。其全經為北涼曇無讖譯大般涅槃經四十卷，稱為北本涅槃。後劉宋慧觀等再治前經為大般涅槃經三十六卷，稱為南本涅槃。說佛之涅槃，非灰身滅智，佛今雖現入滅之相，然佛身常住不滅。此外唐若那跋陀羅譯大般涅槃經後分二卷，說佛之附屬及入涅槃，荼毘，分骨等事。是為前經後分之補足，故稱為後分經。已上數本中，常稱為涅槃經者，乃南北二本之大般涅槃經。南本不拘有台家章安之疏，諸宗一般通用者，北本涅槃也，各家之註述及關於本經之著作如下：涅槃經玄義二卷，隋灌頂撰。涅槃經疏三十三卷，隋灌頂撰，唐湛然再治。涅槃義記二十卷，隋慧遠述。涅槃經遊意一卷，隋吉藏撰。大涅槃經玄義文句會本二卷，隋灌頂撰，唐道暹述，日本守篤分會。涅槃經會疏條目三卷，涅槃經會疏，三十六卷，隋灌頂撰，唐湛然再治，日本本純分會。涅槃經疏私記十二卷，唐行滿集。涅槃經疏私記九卷，唐道暹述。涅槃經疏三德指歸二十卷，缺卷十五，宋智圓述。涅槃經治定疏科十卷，宋智圓撰。涅槃玄義發源機要四卷，宋智圓述。科南本涅槃經三十六卷，元師正排科，可度重訂。涅槃經會疏解三十六卷，元師正分科，明圓澄會疏。涅槃經末後句一卷，淨挺著。
Nirvāṇa Sūtra. There are two versions, one the Hīnayāna, the other the Mahāyāna, both of which are translated into Chinese, in several versions, and there are numerous treatises on them. Hīnayāna: 佛般泥洹經Mahaparinirvāṇa Sūtra, tr. by Po Fazu A.D. 290-306 of the Western Chin dynasty, B.N. 552. 大般涅槃經 tr. by Faxian, B.N. 118. 般泥洹經 translator unknown. These are different translations of the same work. In the Āgamas 阿含there is also a HīnayānaNirvāṇa Sūtra. Mahāyāna: 佛說方等般泥洹經Caturdāraka-samādhi Sūtra, tr. by Dharmarakṣa of the Western Chin A.D. 265-316, B. N. 116. 大般泥洹經Mahaparinirvāṇa Sūtra, tr. by Faxian, together with Buddhabhadra of the Eastern Chin, A.D. 317-420, B. N. 120, being a similar and incomplete translation of B. N. 113, 114. 四童子三昧經Caturdāraka-samādhi Sūtra, tr. by Jñānagupta of the Sui dynasty, A. D. 589-618, B.N. 121. The above three differ, though they are the first part of theNirvāṇa Sūtraof the Mahāyāna. The complete translation is 大般涅槃經 tr. by Dharmarakṣa A.D. 423, B.N. 113; v. a partial translation of fasc. 12 and 39 by Beal, in hisCatena of Buddhist Scriptures, pp. 160-188. It is sometimes called 北本 or Northern Book, when compared with its revision, the Southern Book, i.e. 南方大般涅槃經Mahaparinirvāṇa Sūtra, produced in Jianye, the modem Nanjing, by two Chinese monks, Huiyan and Huiguan, and a literary man, Xie Lingyun. B.N. 114. 大般涅槃經後分 The latter part of theMahaparinirvāṇa Sūtratr. by Jñānabhadra together with Huining and others of the Tang dynasty, B.N. 115, a continuation of the last chapter of B.N. 113 and 114.
