謂成住壞空之四期為一周。為八十增減之時量。舊譯稱之為四中劫。新譯稱之為八十中劫。見劫條。
mahākalpa. The great kalpa, from the beginning of a universe till it is destroyed and another begins in its place. It has four kalpas or periods known as vivarta成劫 the creation period;vivarta‐siddha住劫 the appearance of sun and moon, i.e. light, and the period of life, human and general;saṃvarta壞劫 or 滅劫 destruction first by fire, then water, then fire, then deluge, then a great wind, i.e. water during seven small kalpas, fire during 56 and wind one, in all 64;saṃvartatthāhi増滅劫 total destruction gradually reaching the void. A great kalpa is calculated as eighty small kalpas and to last 1,347,000,000 years.
大劫總目錄 大劫者，合四中劫，一成、一住、一壞、一空，為一大劫。 一、成劫 歷第一次中劫，名曰成劫。 二、住劫 歷第二次中劫，名曰住劫。 三、壞劫 歷第三次中劫，名曰壞劫。 四、空劫 歷第四次中劫，名曰空劫。 合四中劫，共計十三萬四千四百萬年，為一大劫。 凡十方三世所有一切世界，皆悉具此四種。
俱舍論十二卷五頁云：一切劫增，無過八萬，一切劫減，唯極十年。十八劫中，一增一減，時量方等，初減後增。故二十劫，時量皆等。此總名為成已住劫。所餘成壞，及壞已空，并無減增二十差別；然由時量、與住劫同，准住各成二十中劫。成中初劫，起器世間，後十九中，有情漸住。壞中後劫，減器世間。前十九中，有情漸捨。如是所說成住壞空，各二十中，積成八十。總此八十，成大劫量。劫性是何？謂唯五蘊。
合八十小劫或是成住壞空四個中劫為一大劫。
