oṁ,胎藏界之陀羅尼,冠曩莫之語,金剛界之陀羅尼冠唵之語。秘藏記末曰:「唵字有五種義:一歸命。二供養。三驚覺。四攝伏。五三身。」一歸命者,歸依於佛,獻無二之命之義也。所歸之佛體有自佛他佛之二,自佛者,自心之本覺佛,即在纏如來也,蓮華三昧經所謂「歸命本覺心法身,(中略)還我頂禮心諸佛」是也。眾生無始以來違背吾本覺之佛流轉生死中,今始知自心之本佛,歸於本覺之佛,是還源之最初,真言之歸命也。他佛者,已成之佛,即出纏如來,並一切眾生之本覺佛在纏如來也。誦此唵字則歸於如是自他佛之功德,一時成就。二供養者,是亦有自他佛之二,準上可知。三驚覺者,誦唵字時,其音自行者毛孔入,驚覺自心本有之佛及一切之佛,現於目前,如由春風與雷雨而蟄蟲破地出現,草木花果開結(春風者,大悲願行,雷雨者,如來加持力,蟄蟲者,本有法身之如來,草木者,本有之法身,華果者,始成之智身)。四攝伏者,譬如諸司百官有王之勅召時,身心不厭寒暑而參集,行者誦此唵字時,一切諸天龍神等聞此音,皆悉攝伏而參集也(攝伏法有忍之功,瑜祇經曰:「攝伏如奴僕。」)。五三身者法報化之三身也。其故以唵之一字為阿烏麻Auṁ之三字合成,阿者本不生之義,是法身,烏者譬喻不可得,是不可思議之報身,麻者,吾我不可得,現人天鬼畜之諸眾生。因而誦此唵字則三身成現加持掌護行者也。見守護國經九,秘藏記鈔七。

It is 'the mystic name for the Hindu triad', and has other significations. It was adopted by Buddhists, especially by the Tantric school, as a mystic spell, and as an object of meditation. 一唵 悉曇字 (oṃ)。為冠於咒文最初之祈禱語,含有神聖之意。原於吠陀為應諾之義,又用為咒文及祈禱文首先發音之聖音(梵 praṇava)。至奧義書附加祕密之義,成為觀想之對象,進而作為梵、世界,依此觀想之實修為達到第一義(梵)之法。唵之字義,祕藏記末列有歸命、供養、三身、驚覺、攝伏等五種,通常僅用前三種。本字由 (a,阿)、 (u,烏)、(ma,莽)三字合成。阿,為菩提心、諸法門、無二、諸法果、性、自在等之義,亦為法身之義;烏,為報身之義;莽,為化身之義。合三字共為唵字,攝義無邊,故為一切陀羅尼首。密教不僅採用神咒之形式,亦攝取各種解釋法。咒文中冠唵字者甚多,如大日真言「唵阿卑羅哞欠娑婆訶」、西藏喇嘛教六字明咒「唵嘛呢叭吽」等皆是,若修觀此唵字,則三身成現加持護祐行者,即以此功德,而成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。蓋組成唵字之三字,在古代印度思想之中,表男、女、中三性,或表示過去、現在、未來三時,又配於三吠陀,或配覺、夢、熟眠三態,或配火、風、日三種,或配食、水、月,或配天、空、地。而後印度教中,又比擬為毘濕奴(梵 Viṣṇu)、濕婆(梵 Śiva)、梵(梵 Brāhman)等三者,亦即司掌護持、破壞、創造之三神一體(梵 trimūrti)。〔守護國界經卷九、祕藏記鈔卷九〕p5568
