昔釋迦如來為愛法梵志(或作樂法菩薩)時,請剝身皮而乾之,以書佛所說之一偈。求法精勤之極也。智度論十六曰:「如愛法梵志,十二歲徧閻浮提求知聖法而不能得。時世無佛,佛法亦盡,有一婆羅門言:我有聖法一偈,若實愛法當以與汝。答言:實愛法。婆羅門言:若實愛法當以汝皮為紙以身骨為筆以血書之,當以與汝。即如其言。破骨剝皮以血書偈:如法應修行,非法不可受,今世及後世,行法者安穩。」同四十九曰:「如釋迦文佛本為菩薩時,名曰樂法。時世無佛,不聞善語,四方求法,精勤不懈,了不能得。爾時魔變作波羅門,而語之言:我有佛所說一偈,汝能以皮為紙,以骨為筆,以血為墨,書寫此偈,當以與汝。樂法即時自念。我世世喪身無數,不得此利。即自剝皮,曝之令乾,欲書其偈,魔即滅身。是時佛知其至心,即從下方涌出,為說深法,即得無生法忍。」
To flay, or peel. In one of the previous incarnations of Śākyamuni he is said to have written a certain gāthācontaining the Holy Law on a piece of his own flayed skin with one of his bones split into the shape of a pen, and his blood instead of ink. 智度論 27.

一剝皮 為釋迦佛本生故事之一。釋迦如來於過去世行菩薩道時,名愛法梵志(又稱樂法梵志),其時世間無佛,亦無善法可聞。梵志乃四方求法,精勤不懈,了不能得。時有一魔,變作婆羅門,自稱有聖法一偈,若梵志果真求法心切,甘心以皮為紙,以骨為筆,以血為墨,書寫此偈,則當以其偈贈與。愛法梵志聞言,即自剝身皮,曝之令乾,以血書偈。據大智度論卷十六載,其偈為(大二五‧一七八下):「如法應修行,非法不可受;今世亦後世,行法者安隱。」愛法梵志以此精勤求法之因緣,遂得無生法忍。〔大智度論卷四十九〕p5116
