十界分凡夫聖者之二類：地獄、餓鬼、畜生、修羅、人間、天上為六凡。聲聞、緣覺、菩薩、佛為四聖。止觀五之一曰：「凡聖皆具五陰。」同輔行曰：「凡謂六凡，聖謂四聖。」
The six stages of rebirth for ordinary people, as contrasted with the saints 聖者: in the hells, and as hungry: ghosts, animals, asuras, men, anddevas.
一六凡 指六界。十界分為凡夫與聖者二類，凡夫指地獄、餓鬼、畜生、修羅、人間、天上等六界，稱為六凡。（參閱「凡夫」957）p1636
天、人、修羅、畜生、餓鬼、地獄，因此六者都是凡夫位，所以叫做六凡。
