阿羅漢譯言不生。以畢竟不生於三界五趣中故也。又涅槃之涅,亦言不生,眾法常住而無始生也。又梵云阿耨波陀,譯言不生。真言之阿字,不生,以諸法之本初不生故也。又不生為如來之異名,以如來常住不生不滅故也。凡諸法觀為不生者,佛道之樞鍵也。智度論三曰:「阿名不,羅漢名生,後世中更生是名阿羅漢。」涅槃經曰:「涅言不生,槃言不滅,不生不滅名大涅槃。」智度論四十八曰:「菩薩若一切語法中聞阿字,即時隨義。所謂一切法從初來不生相,阿提(Ādi)秦言初,阿耨波陀秦言不生。」楞伽經四曰:「不生即如來異名。」

The 'nir' in nirvana is also erroneously said to mean 'not born'; certain schools say that nothing ever has been born, or created, for all is eternal. The Shingon word 'a' is interpreted as symbolizing the uncreated. The unborn or uncreated is a name for the Tathāgata, who is not born, but eternal ; hence by implication the term means "eternal". ādi, which means"at first, " "beginning","primary", is also interpreted as 不生 uncreated.

一不生 (一)梵語 arhan。音譯阿羅漢。得阿羅漢果者,不再受生於三界五趣之中,即永入涅槃,不受生死之果報,故稱為不生。〔大智度論卷三〕 (二)如來之異名。如來常住不生不滅,故稱為不生。〔楞伽經卷四〕 (三)「涅」字之義,謂眾法常住而無始生。據南本與北本涅槃經卷五載,涅言不生,槃言不滅,不生不滅,稱為大涅槃。 (四)梵語 anutpāda。音譯阿耨波陀。大智度論卷四十八(大二五‧四O八中):「阿提,秦言初。阿耨波陀,秦言不生。」p1281
