tiānwáng
欲界六天之最下天,在須彌山半腹之四方,有天主四人,謂之四天王:東曰持國天王,南曰增長天王,西曰廣目天王,北曰多聞天王。
Maharāja-devas; 四天王 Caturmahārāja. The four devakings in the first or lowest devaloka, on its four sides. E. 持國天王 Dhṛtarāṣṭra. S. 增長天王 Virūḍhaka. W. 廣目天王 Virūpākṣa. N. 多聞天王 Dhanada, or Vaiśravaṇa. The four are said to have appeared to 不空 Amogha in a temple in Xianfu, some time between 742-6, and in consequence he introduced their worship to China as guardians of the monasteries, where their images are seen in the hall at the entrance, which is sometimes called the 天王堂 hall of the deva-kings. 天王 is also a designation of Siva the 大自在, i. e. Maheśvara 摩醯首羅, the great sovereign ruler.

天王 今有狀毗沙門天王像,必右手擎寶塔,然它經無所出,而風穴正用此緣也。予甞讀贊寧《僧史》云:“唐天寶元年,西蕃五國來宼安西,二月十一日奏請兵解援,發師黃里,累月方到,近臣奏且詔不空三藏入內,持念玄宗,秉香爐。不空誦《仁王護國陀羅尼》方二七遍,帝忽見神人可五百員,帶甲荷戈,在殿前,帝問不空,對曰:‘此毗沙門天王第二子獨徤,副陛下心,往救安西也。其年四月,奏二月十一日巳時後,城東北三十里,雲霧冥晦,中有神可長丈餘,皆被金甲,至酉時,鼓角大鳴,地動山搖。經二日,蕃宼奔潰,斯須城樓上,有光明天王現形,謹圖樣隨表進呈,因敕諸道州府於西北隅各置天王形像於佛寺,亦敕別院安置,蓋當時所現之像,手擎浮圖,今相習盡塑於州邑之城上,或伽藍營壘之間是也。
