Bos ( fr. Bavas voc. of Bavat , q.v. ; before vowels and soft consonants Bo ; before hard consonants Bos and BoH ; the latter form also in pause, cf. Pāṇ. viii, 3, 17 &c.; but there is occasional confusion of these forms, esp. in later literature; often also BoBoH .), an interjection or voc. particle commonly used in addressing another person or several persons = O! Ho! Hallo!, in soliloquies = alas! ŚBr. &c. &c. (according to L. a particle of sorrow and of interrogation).
Bos ind. A vocative particle used in addressing persons, and translateable by ‘oh,’ ‘sir,’ ‘oh,’ ‘halloo,’ ‘ah;’ (it drops its final visarga before vowels and soft consonants); kaH ko'tra BoH Ś. 2 ; aTi Bo maharziputra Ś. 7 ; it is sometimes repeated; Bo BoH SaMkaragfhADivAsino jAnapadAH Māl. 3 Bos is said to have, in addition, the senses of ‘sorrow’ and ‘interrogation’.
