Āsa 1 contracted form of aṃsa in compound koṭṭhāsa particle, portion etc.: see aṃsa 1 . Can we compare BHS āsapātrī (see next). Āsa 2 [Sanskrit āśa] food, only in compound pātarāsa morning food, breakfast Snp 387 (pāto asitabbo ti pātar-āso piṇḍapātass'etaṃ nāmaṃ Pj II 374); Dhp-a IV 211; see further reference under pātar; and pacchā-āsa aftermath S I 74. Can we compare BHS āsa-pātrī (vessel) Divy 246? derived from āsa is āsaka with abstract ending āsakattaṃ "eating", food, in nānā° various food or na + anāsak°) Snp 249. See also nirāsa, which may be taken either as nir + *āśa or nir + °āsā. Āsa 3 the adjective form of āsā (feminine), wish, hope. See under āsā. Āsa 4 archaic 3rd singular perfect of atthi to be, only in compound itihāsa = iti ha āsa "thus it has been".
āsa , m. (only known in Vedic cpd. sv-āsa-stha), seat : Gv 474.18 ( vs ) śūrāṇa teṣam ayam āsu ( n. sg. ) sudurjayānām, this is the seat of those heroes … Meter does not permit emendation to āvāsa, which is used in parallel lines 2, 10, etc. ; other parallels vihāra; all three are virtual synonyms. Prakritic contraction of āvāsa to āsa is improbable. For āsa = aṃśa see maitrāsa-tā .
