Avīci [BHS avīci a + vīci (?) no intermission, or no pleasure (?), unknown, but very likely popular etymology 1. avīciNiraya, one of the (great) hells (see Niraya), described in vivid colours at many passages of the Pāli canon, e.g. at Vin II 203 = It 86; Nidd I 18, 347, 405 = Nidd II §304 III D; Paṭis I 83; Dhs 1281; Ja I 71, 96; III 182; IV 159; Dhp-a I 148; Pv-a 52; Pj II 290; Saddh 37, 194; Pañca-g 5 f.; etc. 2. disintegration, decay Vism 449 (a. jarā nāma).
avīci , m. or f. (in Skt. only m. ; rarely also f. in Pali , see CPD s.v. ), n. of a hell (= Skt. and Pali id. ), a hot hell acc. to Mvy 4927 and Dharmas 121 ; passim . Fem. e.g. RP 30.16 ( vs ) dāruṇam (short -a- m.c. ) avīcīm (end of line). Most forms, of course, are ambiguous as to gender. Cf. āvīci .

<b> <c c="#a00149">Avīci</c> </b> <br>Hell. Descriptions of it are to be found in several places in the four Nikāyas <c c="#3b6bd3">MN.iii.183</c> <c c="#3b6bd3">AN.i.141–142</c> It is a quadrangular space, one hundred leagues each way, four-doored, walled all round and above with steel and with floor of incandescent molten steel.<br>It is noteworthy that the word Avīci occurs only once in the four Nikāyas—namely, in a passage in the Cakkavatti-Sīhanāda Sutta of the Dīgha Nikāya, <c c="#3b6bd3">DN.iii.75</c> <c c="#3b6bd3">AN.i.159</c> but in this context there is no indication that the name refers to a purgatory. The word is not found in a list of purgatories given in the Sutta Nipāta <c c="#3b6bd3">Snp.126–131</c> and in the Saṃyutta. <c c="#3b6bd3">SN.i.152</c> It is, however, found in a poem in the Itivuttaka <c c="#3b6bd3">It89</c> which recurs in the Vinaya, <c c="#3b6bd3">Vin.ii.203</c> and there it is specifically called a niraya.<br>In the Dīgha passage mentioned above, the reference to Avīci is in connection with a tremendous growth of population which will occur in Jambudīpa in a future age.
