一、順流，流即生死之流，六道之眾生，起惑造業，順生死之流，而背涅槃之道，即流轉之因果也。二、逆流，由初果須陀洹，斷已後三界之惑，漸逆生死之流，而趣涅槃之道，即還滅之因果也。見涅槃經三十六。
The two ways in the current of transmigration: 順流 to flow with it in continual re-incarnation; 逆流 resist it and seek a way of escape by getting rid of life's delusions, as in the case of the saints.

一二流 乃指順流與逆流而言。輪迴生死，稱為順流。趣向涅槃，稱為逆流。詳言之，順流，即順生死之流。六道眾生，起惑造業，順生死之流而背涅槃之道，此乃流轉之因果。逆流，指由初果須陀洹斷以後三界之惑，故漸逆生死之流而趣向涅槃之道，此即還滅之因果。〔北本涅槃經卷三十六〕p306
順流和逆流。順流是流轉於生死的因果；逆流是還歸於寂滅的因果。
