vigata , as adj. , either lost, hopeless (so perh. vigaya in AMg. and Pkt. , Ratnach. , Sheth ; but their definitions are not clear), or ( Skt. Lex. glanzlos , BR ) unenlightened, dark : ākāṅkṣamāṇā vigatā vipaṇḍitā, sattvā na jānanti samanta-udyamāṃ Mv i.165.3 ( vss ), the creatures (before Buddha appeared), in doubt, lost (? dark), ignorant, do not know all the exertions (of the Buddha; next line). Senart fails to see the situation envisaged.

Vigata (°—) [past participle of vigacchati, in active (reflexive) and medium-passive function] gone away, disappeared, ceased; having lost or foregone (befor + gone = vi-gata), deprived of, being without; often to be translated simply as preposition "without." It nearly always occurs in compounds, where it precedes the noun. By itself rare, e.g. Snp 483 (sārambhā yassa vigatā); Vv-a 33 (padumā mā vigatā hotu).
