Vattati [Vedic vartate; vr̥t. A differentiated Pāli form is vaṭṭati. — Cf. Avesta varət to turn, Sanskrit vartana turning, vartulā = Latin vertellum = English whorl (German wirtel) and vertil; Greek ῥατάνη Gothic waírϸan = German werden (to become, English "turn"); Gothic °waírϸs = English °wards [warp]; Old-bulgarian vrěteno spindle; and many others (e.g. Latin vertex, vortex), q.v.
