uSanas m. [ vaS-kanasi saMpra° Uṇ. 4. 238 ] ( Nom. sing. uSanA ; Voc. sing. uSanan, uSana, uSanaH ) N. of Śukra, regent of the planet Venus, son of Bhṛgu and preceptor of the Asuras. In the Vedas he has the epithet Kāvya given to him, probably because he was noted for his wisdom; cf. Bg. 10. 37 ; kavInAmuSanA kaviH . He is also known as a writer on civil and religious law ( Y. 1. 4 ), and as an authority on civil polity; SAstramuSanasA praRItaM Pt. 5 ; aDyApitasyoSanasApi nItiM Ku. 3. 6.
