Parinibbuta (adjective) [pari + nibbuta] completely calmed, at peace, at rest (as to the distinction of the twofold application see Parinibbāna and cf., Mrs. Rh.D. Buddhism page 191; Cpd. p. 168), viz. 1. gone out, or passed away without any remaining cause of rebirth anywhere, completely extinct, finally released (from rebirth and death), quite dead or at rest [cf. BHS parinirvr̥ta Divy 79]. It is usually applied to the Buddha, or the Tathāgatha, but also to Theras and Arahants who have by means of moral and intellectual perfection destroyed all germs of further existence. With reference to Gotama Buddha: Vin II 284 (atikkhippaṃ Bhagavā p.), 294 (vassasata°e Bhagavati); V 119, 120; D I 204 (acira°e Bhagavati); S I 158 (Tathāgato p.
