Ottappa (neuter) [from tappati 1 + ud, would correspond to a Sanskrit form °auttapya from ut-tapya to be regretted, tormented by remorse. The BHS form is a wrong adaptation of the Pāli form, taking o° for apa°, viz. apatrapya Mvu III 53 and apatrapā Mvu I I 463. Müller P.Gram. and Fausbøll, Sutta Nipāta Index were both misled by the BHS form, as also recently Kern, Toev. sub voce ] — shrinking back from doing wrong, remorse.
