maTu(TU)rA [ maT-u-U-rac ] N. of an ancient town situated on the right bank of the Yamunā, the birth-place of Kṛṣṇa and the scene of his amours and exploits; it is one of the seven sacred cities ( pb ) in India (see avaMti ), and is, to this day, the favourite resort of thousands of devotees. It is said to have been founded by Śatrughna; nirmame nirmamorTezu maTurAM maDurAkftiH R. 15. 28 ; kaliMdakanyA maTurAM gatA'pi gaMgormisaMsaktajaleva BAti 6. 48.
