maTu(TU)rA [ maT-u-U-rac ] N. of an ancient town situated on the right bank of the Yamunā, the birth-place of Kṛṣṇa and the scene of his amours and exploits; it is one of the seven sacred cities ( pb ) in India (see avaMti ), and is, to this day, the favourite resort of thousands of devotees.
