Kaṭasī (feminine) [probably a contamination of kaṭa + sīva(thikā), charnel-house, under influence of following va(ḍḍh°), cf. Sanskrit kaṭa (?) a corpse] a cemetery; only in phrase kaṭasiṃ vaḍḍheti "to increase the cemetery" referring to dying and being buried repeatedly in the course of numerous rebirths, explained by susāna and āḷāhana Thig-a 291. -vaḍḍhenti kaṭasiṃ ghoraṃ ādiyanti punabbhavaṃ Vin II 296 = A II 54 = Thag 456 (where ācinanti (?) for ādiy°), 575; Thig 502. Also in compounds °vaḍḍhana Ja I 146; Ud 72 = Nett 174; °vaḍḍhita S II 178 f. = Nidd II §664.
kaṭasī (= Pali id. , °siṃ vaḍḍheti), cemetery, place where unburied corpses are left : Mvy 7105 = Tib. dur khrod ( id. ); 7419 °sī vardhitā; SP 48.4 ( vs ) kaṭasī ca vardhenti punaḥ-punas te ( i.e. they die again and again; Pali also uses the word only with forms of this verb).
