Jarati [Vedic jarati and jīryati, °gerā to crush, to pound, overcome (cf. jayati); as intransitive to become brittle, to be consumed, to decay, cf. Latin granum, Goth kaúrn, English etc. corn] to suffer destruction or decay, to become old, in two roots, viz. 1. jar [jarati] in causative jarayati to destroy, to bring to ruin Ja V 501 = VI 375. 2. jīr [Sanskrit jīryati] see jīyati, jīrati, jīrayati, jīrāpeti. — past participle jiṇṇa. — Cf. also jara, jarā, jajjara, jīraṇatā.
