PTS 巴英辞典

Eḷa (neuter) [Sanskrit enas] in eḷamūga deaf and dumb A II 252; III 436; IV 226; Miln 20, 251 (cf. Q.K.M. II 71). A rather strange use and explanation of eḷamūga (with reference to a snake "spitting") we find at Ja III 347, where it is explained as "eḷa-paggharantena mukhena eḷamūgaṃ" i.e. called eḷamūga because of the saliva (foam°) dripping from its mouth, v.l. elamukha. — Cf. neḷa and aneḷa. [BD]: there are a number of species of cobras that can project venom from their fangs.
