aBAva a. B. ; Śi. 20. 64 ; Ki. 18. 10. 4 (In phil. ) Privation, non-existence, nullity or negation, supposed to be the seventh category or padArTa in the system of Kaṇāda. Strictly speaking aBAva is not a separate predicament, like dravya, guRa , but is only a negative arrangement of those predicaments; all nameable things being divided into positive ( BAva ) and negative ( aBAva ), the first division including dravya, guRa, karma, sAmAnya, viSeza and samavAya and the second only one aBAva ; cf. atra saptamasTABAvakaTanAdeva zaRRAM BAvatvaM prAptaM ( pb ) tena BAvatvena pfTagupanyAso na kftaH Muktā. aBAva is defined as BAvaBinno'BAvaH ( pratiyogijYAnADInavizayatvaM ) that whose knowledge is dependent on the knowledge of its pratiyogI . It is of two principal kinds saMsargABAva and anyonyABAva ; the first comprising three varieties prAgaBAva , praDvaMsABAva , and atyaMtABAva .
