Añjana (neuter) [from añjati 2 ] ointment, especially a collyrium for the eyes, made of antimony, adjective anointed, smeary; glossy, black (cf. kaṇha II and kāla 1 note). 1. Vin I 203 (five kinds viz. kāḷ°, ras°, sot°, geruka, kapalla); D I 7, 12; Sv I 98 (khār°); 284; Dhp-a III 354 (akkhi° eye-salve). 2. glossy, jet-black Ja I 194; II 369; V 416. The reading añjana at A IV 468 is wrong, it should be corrected into thanamajjanamattaṃ. See also pacc°. ( 2 añjana : mṛgo … raktehi khurehi añjanehi akṣīhi prabhāsvarehi darśanīyehi Mv i.363.18 . No v.l. ; but there is no authority for añjana as adj. [ PTSD quotes 3 Jāt. passages for this, all erroneous.] Senart suggests sāñjanehi or equivalent. But perhaps render: with red hoofs and eyes bright and beautiful (as if?) with collyrium .)
