tōng
作用自在無礙，謂之通。佛、菩薩、外道、仙人之所得者也。即通力、神通等是也。瓔珞經曰：「神名天心，通名慧性。」大乘義章二十本曰：「作用無壅，名之為通。」此有三種之別：一報得通力，三界諸天皆有五種之神通，乃至鬼神亦有小通，此神通皆依果報而自然感得者。二修得通力，三乘聖者修三學而得六通，外道仙人修禪定而現得五通者。三變化通力，三乘聖者以神通力變現種種者。見華嚴大疏三。
Permeate, pass through, pervade; perceive, know thoroughly; communicate; current; free, without hindrance, unimpeded universal; e.g. 神通 supernatural, ubiquitous powers. There are categories of 五通, 六通, and 十通, all referring to supernatural powers; the five are (1) knowledge of the supernatural world; (2) devavision; (3)devahearing; (4) knowledge of the minds of all others; (5) knowledge of all the transmigrations of self and all others. The six are the above together with perfect wisdom for ending moral hindrance and delusion. The ten are knowing all previous transmigrations, havingdevahearing, knowing the minds of others, havingdevavision, showingdevapowers, manifesting many bodies or forms, being anywhere instantly, power of bringing glory to one's domain, manifesting a body of transformation, and power to end evil and transmigration.
