瞿曇姓之別名，釋迦姓為瞿曇姓，瞿曇之元祖，自甘蔗園牛糞中生，故名牛糞種。見俱舍光記二十七。
The first Gotama ancestor of Śākyamuni, who is reputed to have sprung from cow-dung in the Sugar-cane garden, probably a mere tradition that the family sprang from herdsmen.
