佛為囑累大法，摩弟子之頂，或為授記摩頂。法華經囑累品曰：「釋迦牟尼佛，從法座起，現大神力以右手摩無量菩薩摩訶薩頂，而作是言。」
To lay the hand on the top of the head, a custom of Buddha in teaching his disciples, from which the burning of the spots on the head of a monk is said to have originated.

一摩頂 頂，頭頂。指佛為囑付大法，以手摩弟子之頂，或為預示當來作佛之授記。法華經囑累品（大九‧五二下）：「釋迦牟尼佛從法座起，現大神力，以右手摩無量菩薩摩訶薩頂。」又傳法室內密示聞記載，佛以四大海水，三點於迦葉之頂，摩頂付囑大法，而拈華瞬目。p7626
佛用手撫摩弟子之頂。通常佛不是為了付囑大法而撫摩弟子之頂，就是為了授記而撫摩弟子之頂。
