梵語尾賀羅Vihāra,毗訶羅,鼻訶羅。寺原為官司之名。釋名曰:「寺嗣也,治事者相嗣續於其內也。」羅璧志餘曰:「漢設鴻臚寺待四方賓客。永平中佛法入中國,館摩騰法蘭於鴻臚寺。次年勅洛陽城西雍門外立白馬寺,以鴻臚非久居之館,故別建處之。其仍以寺名者,以僧為西方之客,若待以賓禮也。此中國有僧寺之始。」西土稱為僧伽藍,僧伽藍譯言眾園。謂眾人所居所,在園圃生殖之處,佛弟子則生殖道芽聖果也,經曰伽蘭陀竹園祇樹給孤獨園。是西域之寺舍也。後魏太武帝始光元年創立伽藍而名以招提之號,隋煬帝大業中改天下之寺為道場,至唐復為寺。
