又云四無色，無空界之四處也。是乃修四空處定所得之正報。梵名Catuarūpa一空無邊處Ākāśānantāyatana，略名虛空處，又云空處。修虛空無邊定所生之天處也。二識無邊處Vijñānānantāyatana，略云識處。修心識無邊定所生之天處也。三無所有處Ākiñcanyāyatana，修心識無所有定所生之天處也。四非想非非想處Naivasañjñānāsañjñāyatana，又名非有想非無想處。生此天處之人，定心深妙，想念最為昧劣，無麤想，故云非想，非細想，故曰非非想。此四處於五蘊無色蘊，正報唯為受想行識四蘊之假和合而無色身，又無依報之國土宮殿，故曰無色界，又名曰空處。因之非可以國土分四處，故由因行之禪定而說果以立四處之別也。其中前三者從所修之因行而立名，第四處從當體而立名，見俱舍論八，法界次第上。然依部宗而有不同。有部，經部，唯識，總無色法，有之者皆為變現，大眾部有細色而無麤色。又，涅槃經有細色之說。
(or四空天) catur-ārūpya brahmalokas; also 四無色界 and see 四空定. The four immaterial or formless heavens, arūpa-dhātu, above the eighteenbrahmalokas: (1) 空無邊處ākāśānantyāyatana, also termed 虛空 處 the state or heaven of boundless space; (2) 識無邊處vijñānanāntyāyatana, of boundless knowledge; (3) 無所有處 ākiñcanyāyatana, of nothing, or nonexistence; (4) 非想非非想處naivasanjñānasañjnāyatana, also styled 非有想非無想 the state of neither thinking nor not thinking (which may resemble a state of intuition). Existence in the first state lasts 20, 000 great kalpas, increasing respectively to 40, 000, 60, 000 and 80, 000 in the other three.
又名四無色，或無色界，即空無邊處、識無邊處、無所有處、非想非非想處，乃修四空處定的人所得的正報，因此四處的眾生於五蘊中無色蘊，只有受想行識的四蘊，亦即無物質的色身，而只有微妙的精神存在，亦無依報的國土宮殿，故名無色界，或四空處。
