Buddha's caitya, orstūpa, v. 支提. A Buddhist reliquary, or pagoda, where relics of the Buddha, 舍利śarīra, were kept; astūpa塔婆 was a tower for relics; such towers are of varying shape; originally sepulchres, then mere cenotaphs, they have become symbols of Buddhism.
