譬菩薩，聲聞，一闡提之三者。涅槃經三十三曰：「大王有三種馬：一者調壯大力，二者不調齒壯大力，三者不調羸老無力。王若乘者，當先乘誰？。（中略）調壯大力喻菩薩僧，其第二者喻聲聞僧，其第三者喻一闡提。」
The three horses, one young, strong, and tractable; another similar but not tractable; a third old and intractable, i.e. bodhisattvas (or bodhisattva-monks), śrāvakas andicchantis.
